Massive landslide hits Sikkim's Mangan district

On Sunday morning (September 6, 2026), a massive landslide struck Sikkim's Mangan district, temporarily obstructing the flow of two rivers, local officials reported. A significant section of the hillside on a newly constructed road, part of the Naga-Tosa Road, disintegrated near the junction of the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers in the Chungthang subdivision, they explained.

The landslide reduced the flow of both rivers, adding, with no reported casualties or injuries at this time. The severity of property damage, if any, is currently under assessment by the authorities. River levels at the Sankalang and Phidang outposts are presently normal, although the water remains murky, they further noted. The local administration has been instructed to continuously monitor river levels and promptly report any notable changes, they emphasized.
