Lesuuda demands more action from Ruto over insecurity in Samburu

Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda has called on President William Ruto to boost security operations in the region and help bring back families displaced by banditry. During a thanksgiving service for Devolution Principal Secretary Michael Lenasalon in South Horr, Lesuuda noted a decrease in insecurity but stressed that people still lose their lives and have to abandon their homes.

She referenced a previous visit by Ruto to Baragoi during which he vowed to take action against insecurity, but said it was time for renewed efforts. Lesuuda specifically mentioned Lorora, where displaced families have had to live away from their farms. She urged the government to create conditions that allow them to return and resume normal life.

The appeal comes as insecurity has increased in Samburu this year. On July 11, between 40 and 60 armed raiders, possibly crossing from Baringo, attacked herders in Nolkera, killing three civilians. The Kenya Defence Forces and General Service Unit later recovered stolen livestock and killed one raid member. The Maralal-Baragoi-South Horr corridor has seen ongoing security challenges.

In February 2025, bandits ambushed a convoy of remandees at Charda, killing a police officer and causing eight prisoners to escape. The government has since worked on road repairs and announced security operations along the Samburu-Baringo border. Lesuuda also praised health and education initiatives, praising the Social Health Authority and noting that school capitation had been paid on time.

She urged political leaders to focus on delivering services rather than seeking popularity. Lesuuda thanked Ruto for appointing Samburu residents to senior government positions, citing Lenasalon's recent appointment as Devolution PS. She emphasized that security is crucial for residents to return home, farm their land, and ensure their children receive an education.
