ISRO’s role ‘by no means diminishing’: Space agency, Pawan Goenka address staff’s privatisation concerns

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman Pawan Goenka has clarified that the space agency's significance is not diminishing, addressing concerns raised by employee associations about potential privatization. The reforms initiated in 2020 aim to broaden India's space ecosystem by enabling private and non-government players to get involved in manufacturing and large-scale production of space systems.

This move is intended to allow ISRO to focus on advanced research, scientific and strategic missions, emerging technologies, and complex infrastructure where private companies might not be able to develop independently.

The reforms are not about reducing ISRO's role, but rather about creating a larger Indian space ecosystem where ISRO spearheads technological advancements and national missions, while the private sector scales mature technologies and capabilities. ISRO will continue to play a central role in India's space program by leading advanced research and major missions, including the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, an Indian human mission to the Moon, next-generation launch vehicles, and continued exploration of the Moon and other planets.

The employee associations had raised concerns about the potential transfer of manufacturing and operational responsibilities to private companies. However, Goenka reiterated that private participation in defined commercial activities can coexist with a strong, publicly-owned ISRO. He emphasized that the policy change does not imply a reduction in ISRO's importance but rather a shift in the scale and structure of India's space ecosystem.
