In Their Father’s Name: Umahi’s Son Sworn in as LG Chairman in Ebonyi

The Umahi surname has long held influence in Ebonyi State politics, but now it belongs to a new generation. Osborne Umahi, son of Senator David Umahi, has been sworn in as a Local Government Chairman, taking his place in elective office under a name that both opens doors and invites scrutiny. Despite his father's political connections, Osborne chose to study abroad.

He earned a civil engineering degree from the University of Surrey at 21 and later obtained a master's in Finance and Investment Management from the University of Aberdeen. These qualifications gave him an early advantage in corporate leadership before considering elected office. Currently, Osborne heads Brass Oil and Construction Limited, managing road projects and petroleum stations nationwide.

He also chairs Tyneside Oil & Gas and serves as Director of Finance at Forte GCC Innovative Solutions, overseeing a diverse portfolio in real estate, stocks, and bonds. In addition to his business ventures, Osborne founded the Osborn La Palm Royal Resort, expanding it into a five-star chain across Port Harcourt, Abuja, and Abakaliki.

Through the Osborn Foundation, he has supported educational initiatives, donating books to schools in Kano and covering secondary school fees for underprivileged students in Ebonyi State. While these accomplishments may not guarantee success in grassroots governance, Osborne enters his role as Local Government Chairman with both an inherited name and an independent record of achievement.

The ceremonial swearing-in will soon be a distant memory, but the real test will begin as he addresses the needs of local markets, farmers, and communities awaiting functional infrastructure and services. The outcomes of his governance efforts—roads repaired, services delivered, and trust earned—will ultimately determine whether history will remember him as the son of his father or as a visionary leader who built a legacy of his own.
