‘I’m literally shocked I won!’ Osaka survives another US Open scare to reach last 16

New York, September 6 - Two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka overcame an erratic performance to defeat Belgian Elise Mertens 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 and advance to the fourth round of the US Open. The 13th seed struggled with 41 unforced errors, particularly with her backhand, failing to capitalize on a strong first set. After a brief exchange of breaks in the second set, Mertens broke Osaka's serve to take a 5-3 lead.

Osaka then gifted Mertens two break points with a double fault and a backhand into the net. In the third set, Mertens broke Osaka's serve again, leading 3-2, thanks to additional backhand errors from the Japanese player. Osaka was visibly frustrated, berating herself and exchanging heated words with her team. She took a medical timeout to address issues with her left calf and ankle.

After regaining her composure, Osaka broke Mertens' serve at love for a 4-4 tie, saving a break point in the next game for a 5-4 advantage. Mertens fought back, saving a match point and two more in the final game before Osaka claimed the victory.
