Haze: No outdoor sports in Serian red zones, minister says

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 6 — Sports events across the country are required to adhere to guidelines to ensure the well-being of athletes as the haze continues. Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari stated that the government is monitoring the Air Pollutant Index (API) closely from various sources and agencies. He emphasized that athletes engaged in outdoor training should follow the set guidelines to avoid any health risks, especially during high API readings.

"The ministry is in constant contact with the National Sports Institute and National Sports Council to maintain the athletes' well-being, given the upcoming Asian Games," Dr Johari informed reporters after the Oregon Tower Run Series at The TOP Atrium. Earlier, Dr Johari participated in the tower run, completing the 22nd floor in 6 minutes and 30 seconds.

A total of 343 athletes took part in the main event, climbing up to the 68th floor of The TOP Komtar. Regarding the situation in Serian, Sarawak, where hazardous API readings were reported, Dr Johari clarified that any outdoor activities in red-zone areas would be prohibited. However, sports activities can proceed in areas with low API readings at safe or moderate levels.

He added that the ministry would approve any proposed sports events based on government guidelines and the current API status. On Thursday, Sultan Ibrahim granted a state of emergency in Serian due to hazy conditions posing a hazard to public health and safety.
