Hauss Hejny tosses 5 TDs as Colorado State beats Wyoming 35-13 in Rams debut for coach Jim Mora

Hauss Hejny shone brightly in Colorado State's opening victory over Wyoming, as the quarterback completed five touchdown passes to lead the Rams to a 35-13 win on Saturday night. The defense also contributed with three interceptions, setting the tone for Colorado State's newfound success in the Pac-12 Conference.

Hejny, a transfer from Oklahoma State, connected with receiver RJ Vick on three scores, including a standout 57-yard reception that marked the Rams' strong start under new head coach Jim Mora. Hejny finished the game with 214 passing yards and showcased his playmaking ability with a 28-yard catch on a trick play that set up a touchdown on the Rams' opening drive.

The Rams gained a bronze boot trophy for their "Border War" rivalry with Wyoming, marking their first conference matchup in decades. While the teams are not scheduled to face each other in the upcoming season, they are set to resume the rivalry in 2028.

Jim Mora, a veteran NFL and college coach, joined Colorado State from Connecticut, where he spent the last four seasons. He brought in 76 new players to the program this season, with 41 of them being transfers. Among the newcomers was RJ Vick, who previously played at Virginia Union and Wake Forest.

Wyoming managed to briefly gain momentum in the second half when a missed 54-yard field goal by Rams kicker Kali Nguma with 33 seconds left narrowed the score to 14-6. Erik Sandvik responded with a 48-yard field goal, bringing the score back to 14-13. Tyler Hughes then added a 9-yard touchdown run to give Colorado State a 14-13 lead.

Colorado State's defense stepped up in the closing minutes, intercepting Wyoming's final drive. Hejny then found RJ Vick on a crucial play, extending the Rams' lead and securing the victory. The Rams closed out the game by recovering a fumble, finishing strong at the new Pac-12 stadium, which drew a crowd of 40,546 for the Saturday night game.
