Green Party deputy leader linked to property lets despite opposition to landlords

Mothin Ali, the deputy leader of the Green Party, is connected to two rental properties in Leeds, despite the party's opposition to private landlords. The properties were purchased by a company Ali set up and controls, MA Holdings, in June 2022 and March 2025, before the Greens adopted their policy to phase out private landlord ownership in October 2025.

Ali is the sole director of MA Holdings, which buys and sells real estate, lets and operates rental properties, and manages real estate on a fee or contract basis. The company's business model includes buying and selling real estate, letting and operating rental properties, and managing real estate on a fee or contract basis. A Green Party spokesperson stated that Ali has acted solely in the interests of vulnerable close family members for whom he has caring responsibilities, and they are not publicizing the personal information shared with the BBC to protect his family.

The policy to phase out private landlord ownership was adopted by the Green Party at their annual conference in October last year, and all of which Ali supports.
