Germany plans tougher defenses after drone incident near Ukrainian aircraft

Germany is preparing a comprehensive security package to bolster its defenses against drone attacks, cyber intrusions, and potential Russian sabotage following a failed airport attack last month, according to Reuters. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt informed the newspaper that these hybrid attacks, attributed to Russia, are now common and will likely increase.

However, he affirmed that Germany has the capacity to defend itself against such threats. Russia has consistently denied accusations of conducting sabotage operations in Western Europe and has also denied involvement in the German airport incident, threatening retaliation against what its Foreign Ministry called "anti-Russian action."

In response to the reported measures, Germany plans to enhance its mobile counter-drone capabilities for police forces. Deployable units will be stationed in cities, focusing on protecting key transportation hubs and government districts. Operators of critical infrastructure, such as electricity utilities and defense manufacturers, will be granted legal authority to actively counter drones, moving beyond merely detecting them.

Furthermore, Berlin intends to establish a national cybersecurity shield, dubbed a "cyberdome," comprising a network of digital sensors to detect and intercept hacking attempts. Security authorities will increasingly leverage artificial intelligence-supported technology, biometric facial recognition, and video surveillance. Railway stations are among the locations where these systems could be deployed to identify potential attackers planning sabotage acts.

These proposals signify an expansion of Germany's defenses across both physical and digital infrastructure, coinciding with European governments' increasing investments in security and counter-drone technology. The Interior Ministry has not yet provided a comment on the reported measures.
