German space rocket reaches orbit in Europe's 1st commercial launch

German space startup Isar Aerospace successfully launched its Spectrum rocket from Arctic Norway, marking its first commercial orbital launch and a significant milestone for Europe's ambitions in independent space access. The uncrewed Spectrum became the first commercial rocket to reach orbit from continental Europe, signaling a breakthrough for a region where several countries are striving to establish a presence in the rapidly growing satellite launch market.

Isar Aerospace co-founder and CEO Daniel Metzler emphasized that launch capability is currently the biggest bottleneck in the industry. He reassured that the privately owned company remains well-funded, with an initial public offering not currently on the table. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz hailed the launch as "the beginning of a new era," highlighting Europe's efforts to gain greater autonomy in space exploration as the global order shifts under the current U.S. leadership.

Merz visited Isar's launch site in March, underscoring the nation's dedication to achieving self-reliance in space.
