Gachagua proposes new way of appointing Kenyan ambassadors

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has suggested a new approach to appointing Kenyan ambassadors, emphasizing the need for diplomats to actively promote Kenyan products, tourism, and business opportunities abroad. In an address to Kenyans in Spokane, Washington on September 6, 2026, Gachagua argued that the country should shift away from traditional diplomacy focused on maintaining relationships and instead adopt a model centered on commercial interests.

He proposed transforming Kenya's embassies and high commissions into trade hubs where diplomats would actively market Kenyan products and attract business opportunities. Gachagua stressed that embassies should play a more direct role in expanding export markets and creating opportunities for Kenyan businesses both domestically and internationally.

Additionally, he suggested that Kenya should consider appointing diplomats with substantial experience in the countries where they are posted, ideally, at least four years of residency in the host country. Gachagua believes that such experience would enable diplomats to better understand the Kenyan community abroad and provide more effective consular services.

This proposal aligns with Gachagua's broader vision for Kenya's foreign relations, focusing on economic diplomacy and diaspora services to ensure diplomatic missions deliver tangible benefits to the country's economy and citizens overseas.
