Gachagua explains why it is easy to support Sifuna’s presidential bid

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has shared his reasons for being more inclined to support Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s presidential bid compared to his previous decision to back President William Ruto in the 2022 General Election. Gachagua highlighted Sifuna’s family connections and his clean political record as key factors.

He stated that Sifuna, being his cousin, has no issues that would hinder his bid for the presidency. This stands in contrast to Ruto, whose political past he described as having "blood on his hands." Gachagua emphasized that the decision to support Ruto was made despite knowing about his controversial past. He challenged critics questioning Sifuna’s eligibility based on his age and suitability, urging them to present any comparable issues.

Gachagua defended Sifuna against criticism from Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) secretary-general Francis Atwoli, who had discouraged Sifuna from seeking the presidency due to his youth. Gachagua pointed out that Sifuna, at 44, meets the minimum age requirement and compared his age to that of notable U.S. presidents who also assumed office at young ages.

He encouraged Sifuna not to be discouraged by detractors and urged Kenyan politics to focus on merit rather than age when considering political candidates. Gachagua sees potential in blending the youthful energy of younger leaders with the experience of more seasoned politicians, advocating for a more inclusive approach to governance.
