From Frescoes To Global Fame: Shekhawati Havelis Enter UNESCO Tentative List, Boosting Rajasthan’s Heritage Bid

Jaipur, Rajasthan: The iconic Shekhawati havelis of the state are set to receive global recognition as they join UNESCO's Tentative List. This marks a crucial step in Rajasthan's efforts to secure World Heritage status for its unique architectural and artistic heritage. The nomination encompasses historic havelis and heritage sites in 14 key locations, such as Alsisar, Bissau, Chirawa, Churu, Dundlod, Fatehpur, Jhunjhunu, Khetri, Laxmangarh, Mandawa, Mahansar, Nawalgarh, Ramgarh, and Sikar.

Diya Kumari, the Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan, hailed the inclusion of Shekhawati's historic havelis in the UNESCO Tentative List as a momentous achievement for the state's heritage. She emphasized that it is a significant stride towards seeking eventual inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Kumari also highlighted that the inclusion bolsters efforts to preserve this extraordinary heritage and presents it to the world, thereby generating new opportunities for heritage tourism and bolstering local communities.

The havelis, spread across the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, are celebrated for their intricate architecture and astonishing fresco paintings. Their ornately painted facades, courtyards, gateways, and interiors serve as a visual chronicle of the region's artistic traditions and social and cultural life. The murals showcase a diverse array of subjects, including religious and mythological themes, portraits, everyday life scenes, flora and fauna, traditional motifs, and depictions of technological and cultural influences that permeated the area during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The concentration and variety of these painted havelis have earned Shekhawati a distinctive place in Rajasthan's architectural and cultural landscape, making the region an essential destination for heritage and cultural tourism.

Inclusion in UNESCO's Tentative List is projected to further propel initiatives for documenting, conserving, restoring, and managing Shekhawati’s historic built heritage sustainably. For Rajasthan, the move also holds considerable tourism potential.
