Five dead, five injured after Amazon cargo plane overshoots Miami runway

Five people were killed and five others injured when an Amazon cargo plane overshot the runway upon landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday. The incident occurred around 2pm (1800 GMT) as the plane, operating as Prime Air Flight 7598, arrived from Puerto Rico. The plane crashed into several vehicles, leaving some victims trapped, and subsequently caught fire, officials said.

Miami-Dade County fire chief Ray Jadallah reported that three individuals were taken to trauma centers in critical condition, while two others were treated at a local hospital. The crash resulted in thick smoke billowing from the blue and white Boeing 767, prompting the deployment of 60 fire apparatuses, including 200 personnel from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, to initiate search and rescue efforts and firefighting operations.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched a go team to investigate the runway excursion accident. Both the FAA and NTSB will determine the cause of the incident. The airport was closed, and travelers were advised to check directly with their airline before heading to the airport. Amazon released a statement confirming the aircraft experienced an incident during landing but did not disclose the number of casualties.

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel stated that the company is working closely with local authorities to understand the full extent of the event. Miami Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz described the scene as tragic, but there was no apparent threat to public safety.
