Firemen put out Klang bush fire amid open-burning surge

In Klang, firemen successfully doused a bush fire this morning, according to reports from the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department. The incident occurred at Taman Eng Ann, near Jalan Murai, at around 11:05am. A team of seven firefighters from the Klang Utara station was dispatched at 11:11am and reached the scene within five minutes.

The fire affected a 50ft by 30ft patch of vegetation. According to a statement issued by assistant director Ashrul Riezal Asbar, the firefighting operation was completed at 11:36am without any reported casualties.

The New Straits Times warns that a single careless act, such as discarding a cigarette butt, leaving burning rubbish unattended, or using a small fire for land clearing, could lead to a devastating bush or peat fire during the ongoing hot and dry weather conditions. The department's director-general, Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohamad, stated that the prolonged dry spell has significantly reduced the moisture content in grass, bushes, and other vegetation, making them highly combustible.

Nor Hisham emphasized that while hot weather alone is not the cause of major fires, it can easily transform a minor ignition source into a catastrophic blaze. Strong winds further exacerbate the situation by rapidly spreading flames through dry vegetation, expanding the area that firefighters must contain.

The surge in open-burning incidents nationwide has been alarming, with the number of cases rising sharply during the recent hot and dry spell. From August 20 to 23, the incidents escalated from 53 to 70, then to 180, and peaked at 231 on August 23. As of August 24, another 190 incidents were recorded.
