Eight die, 12 hospitalised after consuming illicit liquor in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar

At least eight people lost their lives and over twelve were hospitalized in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district after consuming illicit liquor, prompting a magisterial inquiry. Villagers in Baraj village consumed the alcohol on Saturday night, soon following which they began experiencing nausea and vomiting. The affected individuals were taken to the hospital, where five were confirmed dead.

Dr. Devesh Pateria, the Sagar Chief Medical and Health Officer, noted that the death toll ranged between eight and ten. Medical teams were deployed in three villages identified as hotspots for continuous screening and identification of potential victims. The health department has been conducting door-to-door checks, stabilizing patients locally, and referring them to higher medical centers as needed.

Symptoms of alcohol poisoning, possibly from methyl alcohol, are being considered, though authorities have not confirmed this. Over twenty-five patients have been transferred to higher centers, and the response is ongoing, with the number of affected individuals still being assessed. The district magistrate issued an appeal for anyone experiencing symptoms or who recently consumed liquor to seek medical examination.

Police and excise department officials are investigating the origin of the liquor and have already seized bottles from a local vend for forensic examination. The incident has drawn criticism from the opposition, alleging unchecked liquor mafia operations and the state government's perceived negligence.
