Egyptian broadcaster and influencer sentenced to death after gang, drug convictions

Sara Khalifa, a 39-year-old Egyptian television presenter and social media influencer, has been sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of being part of a criminal organization that imported drugs. She was one of 12 defendants convicted after authorities discovered drug labs in two Cairo apartments, alongside weapons, ammunition, and more than 750 kilograms of synthetic drugs.

The gang was accused of trafficking drugs, possessing firearms illegally, and manufacturing synthetic drugs by importing raw materials from abroad. Khalifa, who is also known for hosting a popular crime program, owns a plastic surgery clinic and an event production company. Prosecutors presented 20 testimonies and digital evidence, including recordings and video footage, to support their case.

Khalifa, who claims she had no prior knowledge of the drugs until she was filmed near them, is appealing the verdict. The death sentences of the gang members were approved and announced on Saturday, with 12 of the 28 defendants receiving the death penalty, nine receiving life sentences, and seven being acquitted.
