Don’t stop them now: Fans party for Freddie Mercury’s 80th birthday

Montreux, Switzerland saw a jubilant gathering of Queen fans on September 5, 2026, to mark what would have been the 80th birthday of the late British music icon Freddie Mercury. Donning extravagant outfits inspired by the singer's stage costumes, fans from around the globe convened at the Freddie Mercury statue overlooking Lake Geneva.

The event, now in its seventh year, continued its tradition of amassing a significant crowd, with Gail Potter, a 61-year-old fan from England, remarking on the crowd's size and the enduring impact of Queen’s music.

Adorned in various Mercury-inspired ensembles, including his iconic yellow jacket from the 1986 Magic Tour and his signature sunglasses from the Invisible Man era, attendees paid homage to the legendary singer. The statue, erected in 1996, was adorned with balloons, flowers, and tributes left by well-wishers. True to Mercury's love for champagne and vodka, bottles of Moet et Chandon and Stolichnaya vodka were present at the base of the plinth.

Queen’s record label, Mountain Studios, located within the Montreux Casino, played a pivotal role in shaping Mercury’s musical legacy. It was there that the band recorded six of their albums. Fredric Potter, a 61-year-old attendee, highlighted the band’s unique qualities, attributing their lasting appeal to the enduring nature of their music.

The festivities included concerts, talks, and a special tribute featuring Mercury’s sister, Kashmira Bulsara, who helped cut an 80th birthday cake. Fans sang "Happy Birthday" together before the celebrations extended into the night, honoring the icon who, despite his untimely demise in 1991, continues to captivate fans worldwide.
