DirectAid concludes flood relief distribution across Greater Accra, Kasoa

DirectAid Ghana has finished distributing relief supplies to communities impacted by the June 2026 floods in Greater Accra and Kasoa. These supplies reached Alajo, Abofu-Achimota, Nana Krom-Lakeside-Santor, Abeka, Dansoman, and Ablekuma-Manhea in Greater Accra, as well as Kasoa in the Central Region. The programme, costing around GH¢2 million, aimed to aid 1,500 families affected by the floods.

Recipients were given packages of rice, cooking oil, spaghetti, beans, tomatoes, and other food items, as well as household items like mattresses, bed sheets, blankets, towels, soap, and Parazone. The aid was funded by donors in Kuwait, with government officials coordinating the effort. DirectAid also intends to provide medical supplies and other resources to clinics and hospitals.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Zongo Development Fund, Hajia Rakia Abdulai, at the last distribution in Dansoman, urged residents to stop constructing on waterways and disposing waste improperly, as these actions exacerbate flooding. She called for responsible behavior to reduce the frequency and intensity of flood disasters and expressed hope for communities to unite in celebrating positive events instead of gathering to mourn preventable losses.

The floods affected numerous areas in Greater Accra and other parts of the nation, leaving families with damaged homes and livelihoods. The relief operation provided food and household essentials to affected families as they worked to recover from the disaster. The completion of the DirectAid operation has heightened awareness of the necessity for flood prevention alongside emergency relief, especially stricter enforcement against development on waterways and enhanced waste management.
