‘Country’s biggest fight’: Amit Shah outlines roadmap for ‘drug-free’ India by 2029

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has declared the fight against drug trafficking the country's biggest national challenge, following the eradication of Naxalism. Shah unveiled a three-year roadmap and vision document aimed at making India drug-free by 2029. He emphasized that narcotics trafficking destroys future generations and that the illicit money generated often funds terrorism.

Shah stated that the government has taken measures since 2019 to combat narcotics, dismantling networks and breaking financial chains. Prior to 2014, action against narcotics was fragmented and limited, but the BJP government prioritized this issue as national security. The NCORD (Narco Coordination Centre) mechanism was created in 2019, integrating local police with national strategy and forming dedicated task forces in all states and union territories.

Under the BJP government, the fight against narcotics has transitioned into a coordinated, continuous campaign. Seizures of narcotics and psychotropic substances have increased significantly since 2014, from 26 lakh kgs to over 1.19 crore kgs as of July 2026. Shah outlined a four-pillar vision document focusing on supply reduction, demand reduction, harm reduction, and capacity building.
