Call for stronger feed support to boost local meat production

Qatar's National Food Security Strategy 2030 emphasizes sustainable domestic production, strategic reserves, and diversified supply chains. However, local livestock breeders argue that rising feed costs, limited green fodder supplies, water constraints, veterinary expenses, and restricted marketing channels hinder expansion. Breeders demand a more integrated support system to help them grow domestic animal production.

Salah Mohamed al-Kuwari emphasizes the need for a long-term approach, affordable fodder, and designated grazing areas for livestock complexes. He proposes establishing livestock-product markets within major livestock clusters to reduce transportation costs. Mohamed Saad al-Kuwari highlights the impact of skyrocketing green-fodder prices, suggesting the creation of a non-profit organization to supply feed at reasonable prices.

Nabil al-Ajmi points out limited space for expansion at his livestock facility, stressing the importance of affordable green fodder, accounting for about 60% of his animals' feed requirements. Jaber al-Marri describes daily feed shortages, particularly with imported dry feed, and calls for stronger assistance for green fodder. Fawaz al-Muhannadi advocates for importing selected sheep and goat breeds to improve domestic herd quality and productivity.

Abdullah Al-Khawar emphasizes the need for stronger water support, as high temperatures significantly increase animals' water requirements. Breeders collectively request support beyond subsidized feed, including reliable green fodder supplies, water access, improved livestock breeds, veterinary assistance, more land, and improved marketing channels to alleviate pressure on farms and boost domestic production.
