Bandit attacks force residents to abandon 15 villages in Katsina

At least 15 villages in the Dandume Local Government Area of Katsina State have been deserted due to renewed attacks by bandits, according to residents. The BBC reports that insecurity has increased in the Funtua, Dandume and Bakori local government areas, with residents expressing fear and restricted movement. A Funtua resident stated that bandits now attack various parts of the town, even with the presence of security personnel.

A recent incident saw security personnel exchange gunfire with bandits after they tried to seize cattle in the MTD area, resulting in one bandit's arrest and another being killed. In Bakori, residents from more than 10 towns and villages, including Kakumi, Sabon Layi, Gidan Jaura and Garanguzai, are concerned over the continuous attacks.

A Dandume resident noted that bandits attack communities almost daily, resulting in the abduction of over 100 people within two weeks. Many victims are still held captive, while others have been released after paying ransom. The bandits have reportedly driven farmers away from their homes and farms, taking livestock and people. As a result, about 15 villages in Dandume have become deserted due to the bandit attacks.
