API readings in Serian improve, Kuching, Sri Aman now in very unhealthy level

According to the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) portal, air quality in Kuching and Sri Aman has worsened, now classified as "very unhealthy." The Kuching station reported an API reading of 245, while Sri Aman recorded 214. Serian remained in the "unhealthy" range, with an API of 189, but this was a significant improvement from last Friday's reading of over 500, which placed it in the "unhealthy" category.

The improvement in Serian's API is attributed to intermittent rain in parts of West Kalimantan and Sarawak, which reduced transboundary haze levels. The Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee has been monitoring air quality and weather conditions closely, sharing this information with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Despite the deteriorating air quality, all businesses and employment activities in the area remain permitted. However, 54 primary schools and nine secondary schools under the jurisdiction of Bintulu and Tatau/Sebauh District Education Offices have been closed until September 11 due to the hazardous air conditions. The decision to close these schools was based on continuous monitoring and the API readings reaching very unhealthy levels by 8 pm.
