An Apple Watch Ultra 4 Could Outshine the Series 12 This Year, but at What Price?

Apple is rumored to unveil two new Apple Watch models at its Sept. 9 event - the Ultra 4 alongside the flagship Series 12. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, both watches will feature faster chips, new health and fitness features, and possibly an upgraded S11 or S12 processor. The Ultra 4, which launched in 2022, has seen a significant upgrade in terms of its rugged titanium build, sapphire crystal display, and features like recreational scuba diving and emergency satellite connectivity.

However, it hasn't followed the Series' annual release cycle, with a two-year gap between the Ultra 2 and Ultra 3. The Ultra 4's processor upgrade could justify a return to a back-to-back refresh, but it's likely to come at a higher price. The Ultra 3 already starts at $799, double the Series 11's starting price, and Apple has increased prices across its hardware lineup this year.

The Ultra 4 may benefit from the new WatchOS 27, which brings Siri AI to the Apple Watch. This AI is notably more advanced than traditional Siri, capable of answering complex questions, referencing information in native apps, and avoiding frustrating responses. However, there's lag due to the software being in beta. Battery life is another area where a more efficient processor could help.

Despite Apple's longest-lasting watch, the Ultra 3, which offers about two days of consistent day-and-night use, it still falls short of traditional sports-watch brands like Garmin and Coros. The Ultra 4 may also see expanded one-handed gesture controls, new workout updates, and perimenopause insights in WatchOS 27. There's also a possibility of expanded blood pressure features, although Apple has encountered accuracy problems with its current hypertension notifications.

Touch ID, a potential new addition, is being experimented with internally, which could be debuted on the Ultra 4 due to its larger case and additional physical Action button. However, these are all still speculative until Apple confirms the details.
