'All of us in software need to figure out how to stay relevant': Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu

Sridhar Vembu, founder of Zoho, has called on software professionals to consider how they can maintain their relevance in the face of AI advancements. This revelation came in response to former Exa AI CEO William Bryk's claim that AI might surpass human capabilities in mathematics within a few months.

Vembu emphasized that the question isn't merely whether AI will take over all tasks, but rather, how many human workers will still be necessary.

The tech mogul pointed out that AI excels at solving mathematical problems structured like games such as Chess or Go. However, creating an entirely new mathematical system or game that humans would find intriguing remains a challenging task, one that humans do infrequently. Nonetheless, Vembu noted that AI could produce a substantial fraction of software code.

To ensure the reliability of AI-generated code, Vembu highlighted the potential of proof systems like Lean, which are currently used for checking mathematical theorems. Such systems could eventually be employed to verify the accuracy of AI-generated software code.

Vembu clarified that the future of software development won't involve AI handling every aspect of the process. Instead, the more pressing concern is the extent to which human participation will be required as AI takes on a larger share of tasks. This shift will impact software developers, testers, and reviewers whose responsibilities currently include writing, testing, and reviewing code.

Furthermore, Vembu differentiated software engineering from pure mathematics, noting that software development is intertwined with the complexities of the real world, including human emotions and collaborative dynamics. Consequently, AI might become exceptionally proficient at coding without displacing all human roles in software creation.
