10-year-old jumps from burning French farmhouse, saves two dogs and teddy

A 10-year-old boy named Milo jumped from an upstairs window of a burning farmhouse in Poizat-Lalleyriat, France, to save two dogs and his beloved teddy bear. The farmhouse, a 19th-century wooden structure, caught fire rapidly on the evening of Friday, September 4 in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region. Neighbors called for emergency assistance as they witnessed the quick spread of flames.

Firefighters, including 32 from surrounding stations, arrived at the scene shortly after the alarm was raised. Milo, who was home alone at the time, showed remarkable courage and presence of mind. With ground-floor exits blocked by the advancing fire, he leaped from an upper story onto the ground below. Mayor Samuel Becot praised Milo's actions, stating he displayed "a lot of courage and great presence of mind."

After exiting the burning building, Milo returned to help the family dogs and retrieved his cherished teddy bear before gathering his few belongings. He was briefly treated at Oyonnax Hospital and issued a minor injury: two stitches in his fingers. The family and community have taken in Milo since the incident, while a local council provides temporary lodging for them.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigators are working to determine how the tragedy started. Similar acts of bravery have been reported in other French rescues, such as a Paris caretaker saving individuals from a sixth-floor ledge during a building fire. In recent months, pets have been rescued from flames across Spain and France, including in Avila and from evacuated homes.
