Zonal Devt Commissions Will Deliver Dividends of Democracy to Nigerians, Says NEDC Board Member

Former National Assembly member, Hon. Sam Onuigbo, currently serving on the board of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), expressed optimism that the newly established zonal development commissions under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would deliver crucial infrastructure, restore livelihoods, and bring the dividends of democracy to Nigerians nationwide.

During an interaction with journalists in Abuja, Onuigbo highlighted that the NEDC, established after a law in 2017, had made significant strides in reconstructing infrastructure, resettling internally displaced persons, and supporting educational and healthcare facilities in the North-east region. He stated that the commission had addressed the devastating impact of Boko Haram insurgency, which destroyed infrastructure and displaced communities.

Onuigbo further revealed that the commission had received authorization to deploy electric vehicles, showcasing the government's commitment to modernizing infrastructure. He expressed confidence that other zonal commissions, such as the South-east Development Commission, would replicate the NEDC's success, provided they received proper funding and oversight.

Onuigbo emphasized that these commissions aimed to deliver government policies directly to rural and underserved communities, addressing decades of neglect and conflict-related devastation. He argued that the commissions were essential to complement federal projects, stimulate investment, create employment, and improve access to essential services.

However, Onuigbo stressed that the success of the commissions depended on accountability, prudent financial management, and translating budgetary allocations into tangible projects.
