Workplaces in Serian may operate during haze emergency with health precautions, says SDMC

KUCHING, Sept 5 — Government offices, private enterprises, industries, plantations, construction sites and quarries in Serian may remain operational during the haze emergency, but employees must adhere to health precautions. Sarawak Deputy Premier and Disaster Management Committee chairman, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, stated that the committee is closely monitoring the Air Pollutant Index (API) in Serian over the next three days.

Uggah warned that should the API level rise above 500, the committee would propose an extension of the emergency status to Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The Serian air quality monitoring station recorded an API reading of 334 at 10 am, which is considered hazardous. Uggah suggested the public avoid outdoor activities, wear an N95 or three-ply mask if going outside is necessary, and take extra care of children, the elderly, and vulnerable individuals.

The declaration of an emergency in Serian Division was approved by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, as the API reading surpassed 500, following advice from the Prime Minister, Sarawak Premier, and relevant agencies regarding the hazardous air quality in the area.
