What happened in the Lindsay Clancy trial: She killed her children, then tried to take her own life

The Lindsay Clancy murder trial reached a mistrial on Friday after seven days of deliberation. Clancy, 36, admitted to killing her three children, but the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict. The case, which drew intense national attention, focused on whether Clancy should be held responsible for the killings due to her postpartum psychosis.

Clancy's attorney argued she was acting under the duress of her mental condition, citing stress, sleep deprivation, and hormonal changes following childbirth. Prosecutors maintained that she had acted deliberately. Despite the jury's inability to reach a decision three times, the judge initially declared a mistrial and later allowed Clancy's attorney to appeal the decision to the Massachusetts top court, but the court ultimately declined to stop the mistrial.

Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, was charged in January of 2023 for strangling her children – 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan – with exercise bands. She allegedly carried out the murders after her ex-husband left the house to get medicines and dinner. Clancy, who is still paralyzed from the waist down following a suicide attempt by jumping from a second-story window, remains charged with murder and is awaiting resolution at Tewksbury Hospital.
