However, their status among the league's elite teams since 2000 has come into question, as they were left off a recent list of the NFL's top 10 teams compiled by FOX Sports. Former players T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Emmanuel Acho criticized the omission, arguing that the Steelers, despite their impressive accolades, were not considered exceptional.

The Steelers, with their dominant defenses in both 2005 and 2008, faced criticism for not having a singular defining element that set them apart from the teams on the list, such as the 2000 Baltimore Ravens or the 2007 New England Patriots. Houshmandzadeh and Acho believed that the Steelers were simply good teams, but not on the same level as the generational squads on the list.

They pointed to the Bucs' dominant defense, the Ravens' exceptional defense, and the Seahawks' all-around excellence as factors that made them stand out.

Despite their two Super Bowl wins, the 2008 Steelers' lack of a standout offense posed a challenge in their case for inclusion on the list. Still, their outstanding defense and clutch performances in the playoffs provided a solid argument for their status among the NFL's elite teams since 2000.
