US warship used in Iran operation arrives in Mombasa

A United States Navy guided-missile destroyer, USS Ross (DDG 71), anchored in the Port of Mombasa on September 5, 2026, for a regular maintenance visit. The ship, a part of the Arleigh Burke-class, had been engaged in operations supporting the US confrontation with Iran since April 2026.

The arrival of USS Ross underscores the strong security cooperation between the United States and Kenya, particularly in maritime and counterterrorism efforts. Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Kenya, Susan M. Burns, emphasized that the port visit reflects the practical strength of the U.S.-Kenya partnership. Port stops like these allow US forces to maintain readiness and engage with local maritime partners, including in the Western Indian Ocean.

The visit also underscores the role of regional ports for US Navy ships, enabling them to sustain operations without returning to home ports. For the crew of USS Ross, the visit provided a much-needed rest and opportunity to engage with Kenyan maritime partners. Cmdr. Pia Chapman, the commanding officer of USS Ross, expressed gratitude for the welcome from the people of Mombasa and the chance to reconnect with Kenyan colleagues.
