Ukraine war: Trump sends Witkoff, Kushner to Moscow, Kyiv for peace talks

President Donald Trump has announced plans to dispatch envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Russia and Ukraine in an effort to negotiate an end to the four-year conflict. The negotiators will visit Moscow and Kyiv, carrying a proposal to cease the war, the latest US diplomatic attempt to resolve Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II.

A senior Ukrainian official confirmed the envoys are set to arrive in Kyiv on Sunday. According to Axios, the duo will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday before proceeding to Kyiv for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday. The Kremlin has not commented on the reported visits. Trump stated that the envoys are seasoned negotiators who have made significant contributions in previous peace efforts, including ceasefire negotiations in Gaza and Iran.

He added that Washington has developed a potential pathway towards peace. "We have an idea for peace," Trump affirmed. The trip would be the first visit to Kyiv by Witkoff and Kushner since Trump returned to the White House last year, having previously pledged to bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. Both envoys have been involved in prior US diplomatic initiatives, including negotiations involving ceasefires in various regions.

Witkoff has made multiple trips to Moscow as part of Washington's previous attempts to rekindle Russia-Ukraine negotiations.
