Translational research is key to bridging the Valley of Death: Mirik Gogri, Founder, ITRI

Mirik Gogri, founder of India's Translational Research Initiative (ITRI), emphasizes the importance of bridging the "Valley of Death" in research. Translational research transforms scientific discoveries into real-world applications and products. Gogri, also leading Spectrum Impact, an investment firm, has invested in 100 climate solution organizations and companies globally.

He spoke to indianexpress.com about the need for a robust translational research ecosystem in India, the challenges, and the role of philanthropic capital.

Translational research involves validating ideas, developing prototypes, testing, and scaling technologies. It is crucial to move innovations from the laboratory to commercialization. However, India lacks sufficient facilities to connect the gap between lab ideas and products. ITRI aims to address this issue by setting up 10-12 hubs or lighthouses at leading academic institutions across the country.

Gogri explains that the link between Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) and translational research is significant. TRL 1-3 represent laboratory versions, while TRL 8-10 correspond to semi-commercial and commercial versions. The most critical gap lies in TRL 4-7, which represents piloting. Academia focuses on IP-level research at TRL 3, while industry seeks TRL 8 products. This gap explains why ITRI is necessary.

ITRI focuses on healthcare and biologics, energy and climate, and advanced manufacturing. Specific areas of interest include membranes, spatial transcriptomics, 2D materials, continuous chemical manufacturing, advanced precision manufacturing, plant phenotyping, and solar reliability. Over Rs 150 crore is committed to the initiative, with ongoing efforts to engage potential funders to pool in more capital.
