‘Tender Loving Care’ Review: Mike Leigh Delivers Another Gentle Gem

The British film director Mike Leigh returns with his latest film, "Tender Loving Care," a tender and humanistic gem that marks his 83rd year in the industry. The movie, which had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, continues Leigh's tradition of making films that are rich in humanity and empathy. The story centers on Amy Spooner, a social worker portrayed by actress Kate O’Flynn, who is trying to help an old patient adjust to life after a heart attack, but faces challenges as he appears to have nowhere to go.

The film captures the daily struggles of social workers in an era of cutbacks, while also delving into the personal lives of Amy and her friends, Rosie and Birdie and Geoff. These characters manage to find moments of joy and connection, even in the face of hardship. Leigh's unique process of building characters from the ground up and letting the story unfold naturally results in a film that feels both authentic and deeply moving.
