Taiwan’s opposition parties split over mayoral race, threatening 2028 election alliance

A rift between Taiwan's two main opposition parties, the Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People's Party (TPP), over a mayoral race could jeopardize their potential 2028 alliance. The KMT nominated Hsinchu county councillor Wu Hsu-chih, while the TPP's Chiu Chen-yuan entered the race. The dispute has exposed differing interpretations of an earlier agreement on electoral cooperation, potentially harming opposition prospects in local elections and the 2028 presidential race.

"A seemingly insignificant split can produce a 'butterfly effect'," warned political science professor Chang Yuan-hsiang. The contested race is a high-tech hub, home to over 220,000 residents, and a crucial battleground for both parties. The KMT sees the matter differently, arguing that selecting the strongest candidate should take precedence over automatic concession.

KMT legislator Lee Yen-hsiu echoed concerns, saying the dispute could lead to a "butterfly effect", affecting blue-white cooperation. Analysts suggest the bigger danger may lie beyond Zhubei, as TPP supporters could turn to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the Hsinchu county magistrate race. For the KMT, the risk is winning small but losing big, as TPP voters might not follow if Chiu withdraws.

The 2028 contest is the more critical consideration, as the TPP faces difficulties mounting a competitive bid without its candidate for the top spot.
