Singleton throws for 3 TDs in 1st half as App State opens season by beating FCS-program Maine 55-3

Appalachian State kicked off their season with a decisive 55-3 victory over Maine, as Malachi Singleton delivered an outstanding performance by tossing for 291 yards and scoring three touchdowns in the first half of the game. Singleton's efficiency was remarkable, completing 18 of 24 passes for 250 yards and three scores during the opening 30 minutes.

Singleton's prowess continued as he connected with Sam Pickett III for two touchdowns, one covering 14 yards and another 7 yards, propelling App State to a commanding 31-0 lead. In the second quarter, Jaquari Lewis added a 12-yard touchdown run, extending the lead further to 38-0. The team solidified their dominance in the second half, with Nate Branch contributing a 36-yard touchdown run early on before Jackson Grier sealed the game with a 28-yard touchdown run.

App State's ground game was particularly impressive, outgaining Maine 647-250, with 299 yards achieved through the running game. The Mountaineers struggled offensively, managing only 12 first downs throughout the game. Key defensive plays included intercepting passes by Caleb Pitts and Colton Phares, while Eddie Buehler, making his second collegiate appearance, completed 18 of 32 passes for 198 yards for Maine, which entered the contest at 1-1 in the season.

This was the third encounter between App State and Maine, with the Mountaineers previously emerging victorious in 2002 and 2011.
