Signs that your teen may be abusing drugs

Teenagers in Nigeria are increasingly at risk of drug abuse due to the easy access to illicit substances and psychotropic drugs. Regulatory bodies have raised alarms over the surge in drug abuse, with cartels deliberately manufacturing and smuggling drugs into everyday items. Cannabis, tramadol, codeine-containing cough syrups, methamphetamine, alcohol, cigarettes, and inhalants like glue are some of the substances commonly abused by teenagers.

Peer pressure and a desire to fit in or achieve status symbols contribute significantly to the spread of illicit substances among teens. Parents must be vigilant for signs of drug abuse to prevent it from becoming a severe problem. Warning signs include unexplained behavioral changes, such as irritability, aggression, withdrawal, and secrecy.

Changes in friendship, including avoidance of family and new, secretive peer groups, can also indicate drug use. Altered sleep and appetite patterns, decline in normal functioning, and a craving for validation are other potential indicators. Parents should observe the pattern of changes, not just single incidents, and seek professional help early.
