SANRAL warns of N1 closures as damaging winds hit Western Cape

SANRAL, the South African National Roads Agency, has issued a warning to drivers on the N1 Toll Road, which stretches between Paarl and Worcester in the Western Cape, regarding strong gusty winds. The agency has specifically highlighted the Hugo’s River viaduct, located west of the Huguenot Tunnel entrance, as being particularly vulnerable to extremely high wind gusts. In the past, this area has seen trucks and even smaller vehicles with trailers and caravans being overturned due to the powerful winds.

In response to this threat, SANRAL plans to construct wind barriers along the Viaduct to minimize the impact of the strong gusts on passing vehicles. Meanwhile, in the Northern Cape, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Human Settlements remains in a heightened state of alert due to the strong winds that have been moving through certain regions of the province.

The department assures the public that its disaster management teams in every municipality are prepared to provide assistance to residents who may be affected by the adverse weather conditions.

On top of these developments, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has recently issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for damaging interior winds across significant portions of the country. This alert serves as a reminder of the unpredictable and potentially hazardous weather patterns that can affect various parts of the nation.
