Ruto to launch 3 youth empowerment initiatives under NYOTA programme

President William Ruto will launch three new initiatives under the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme on September 8, 2026, aiming to address youth unemployment, formalize informal skills, and promote financial inclusion. The event will take place at the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) Athi-River Center in Athi River, beginning at 9 am.

The first initiative is the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme, which will formally recognize competencies gained through work experience, apprenticeships, and other non-traditional learning methods. It is expected to issue certificates to 3,727 beneficiaries, helping to bridge the gap between practical skills and formal qualifications required for employment.

The second initiative is the launch of the Fundi Locator, a national skills matching and exchange portal. This digital platform will connect skilled workers with employment opportunities, improving visibility for those in the informal sector and facilitating better identification of workers with specific technical abilities by employers and clients.

The third initiative is the revamped Haba na Haba Savings Scheme, which will encourage workers, particularly those in the informal sector, to regularly save and participate in social security programs. This scheme, in partnership with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), aims to provide accessible savings and social security solutions for workers who may not typically engage in formal pension arrangements.
