PWHL’s Walter Cup fails to reach destination for second time in 2 weeks

The Professional Women’s Hockey League’s Walter Cup failed to arrive at its intended location for the second consecutive week, causing disappointment among fans and players alike. Montreal Victoire forward Shiann Darkangelo took to Instagram to express her frustration, stating that the trophy did not arrive in time for an event with Athleta in Brighton, Mich. Darkangelo acknowledged that many supporters were eager to see the Cup, but she remained disappointed with the situation.

The Cup had not been delivered as of Saturday afternoon, though its whereabouts were known, according to a source with direct knowledge of the matter and permission to speak anonymously. This was the second instance where the Cup failed to reach its destination on time, first missing an appearance with Montreal Victoire forward Dara Greig in Lethbridge, Alta., on Aug.

20. The PWHL, in a subsequent statement, acknowledged the issue and stated that they were working with the shipping company to locate the trophy. Thankfully, the Cup was eventually found and returned to Montreal on Aug. 24.

The PWHL has been using the same shipping company for this week's event as they did in August, the source confirmed. Darkangelo expressed her regret for those who were looking forward to seeing the Cup and invited fans to stop by Athleta between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for a chance to shop, take photos, and say hello. The official Walter Cup, measuring approximately 24.5 inches high, 13 inches wide, 12.5 inches long, and weighing 35 pounds, was presented to the Victoire after their championship victory in May.

The trophy is kept in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, while each championship team receives a replica to tour the continent. The PWHL, established in August 2023, has grown from six teams in its inaugural season to 12 ahead of the upcoming 2026-27 season, with Montreal Victoire becoming the first Canadian team to win a championship in 2026.
