Putin orders Russian forces not to strike Kyiv for three days – Peskov

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced on Sept. 5 that Russian forces would not carry out strikes on Kyiv for three days, commencing at midnight. This decision came after U.S. presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Moscow for a visit. The U.S. negotiators touched down at Vnukovo Airport, where they met with Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev.

Earlier, Ukraine's General Staff confirmed that combat continued on the front despite Russia's rejection of Ukraine's temporary ceasefire proposal from Sept. 5-9. The General Staff emphasized that a ceasefire must be reciprocal to protect the lives of military personnel. On Sept. 4, President Zelenskyy confirmed that U.S. envoys Witkoff and Kushner would visit Ukraine on Sept.

6 after their time in Russia. During this period, Ukraine had agreed to suspend long-range strikes on Russia to maintain Russian airspace functionality. Shortly before midnight on Sept. 5, Ukrainska Pravda reported that Ukraine's Defense Forces had been instructed to observe a unilateral ceasefire from 12 a.m. Sept. 5 to 11:59 p.m. Sept.

8. The Ukrainian initiative did not result in an agreement with Russia. RBC-Ukraine also reported that Ukraine was awaiting Russia's response to a temporary halt to airstrikes proposal. The New York Times stated that the U.S. had requested that Kyiv halt drone attacks on Moscow and Russian energy infrastructure during Witkoff and Kushner's visit.
