Police looking into 'shameful' racist online comments about Nepal-Tibet disaster, Air India: SM Shanmugam

Senior Minister K Shanmugam called out racist and xenophobic online comments about the Nepal-Tibet disaster and Singapore Airlines' investment in Air India. He emphasized that these comments are "shameful, nasty, totally unacceptable" and directed the police to investigate them. The Ministry of Digital Development and Information plans to ask social media platforms to remove such comments that breach guidelines.

MP Alex Yam described these comments as "not just racist but downright heartless." Shanmugam notes that most Singaporeans do not share these views, citing the generosity of Singaporeans in raising over S$3 million for Nepal relief efforts. He also highlighted recent cases of anti-Indian, racist remarks, including some originating from overseas.

Shanmugam stressed the importance of not allowing such racism to divide the country and suggested that authorities take a tough line to protect Singapore's multiracial, multi-religious fabric.
