PM Modi urges teachers to watch for drug addiction, excessive screen time among students

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed national award-winning teachers at his residence, advising them to keep an eye out for drug addiction and excessive screen time among students. He emphasized that teachers should not solely focus on academic performance but also observe students' behavior and daily activities. In urban areas, it can be challenging to detect drug issues as no one knows who is providing substances to whom.

Teachers are encouraged to take the lead in raising awareness and closely monitoring any changes in students' behavior. Modi stressed the importance of preserving a child's childhood, suggesting that teachers can help by fostering interests in extracurricular activities such as sports, physical play, and creative hobbies. These alternatives can naturally reduce screen time.

President Droupadi Murmu echoed similar sentiments on National Teachers Day 2026, stating that teachers play a crucial role in shaping students into responsible citizens who uphold cultural heritage, scientific outlook, and the welfare of humanity. Murmu reminded teachers that they hold the trust of parents and guardians, who believe educators will prioritize their children's safety and development.
