Plateau Govt closes schools over suspected diphtheria cases

The Plateau State Government has temporarily shut down all primary and secondary schools due to an outbreak of diphtheria. This decision aims to prevent students from contracting the disease. The closure follows the confirmation of several deaths from suspected diphtheria complications. According to Dr Nicholas Baamlong, the Plateau State Commissioner for Health, at least 23 people have died from the disease.

Nine patients are currently hospitalized at the Jos University Teaching Hospital and the Plateau Specialist Hospital. The government ordered the closure on Saturday, September 7, 2026, and it will remain in effect until further notice. The directive impacts schools in Jos North, Wase, Jos South, and Bassa Local Government Areas.

Governor Caleb Manaseh Mutfwang issued the order after reports of suspected diphtheria cases in these areas. Schools that have already reopened must also close from Monday. Stakeholders are urged to keep students at home to protect their safety and well-being. The government appreciates the cooperation of all parties in taking these measures for the people of Plateau State.

Concerns have been raised among parents and health workers about the potential for the highly contagious bacterial infection to spread in crowded classrooms. Diphtheria can cause severe breathing problems, heart failure, and is potentially fatal if not treated promptly.
