Peace Corps celebrates 65 years of partnership

The United States Embassy in Ghana celebrated the 65th anniversary of the Peace Corps, highlighting the long-standing partnership between the two nations. The event gathered government officials, volunteers, host families, and stakeholders to reflect on the programme's impact on Ghana's development. Peace Corps, a U.S. government agency, sent volunteers to Ghana since 1961 to work on education, health, agriculture, and community development projects.

Nearly 5,000 volunteers have served in Ghana, contributing to sectors such as agriculture, water, sanitation, hygiene, and health. Their work includes improving farming methods, introducing STEM skills, and building clinics and health labs. The anniversary also acknowledged the importance of the personal connections volunteers formed with Ghanaians, emphasizing the intangible benefits of these relationships.

Peace Corps Country Director Tamu Daniel noted that the partnership has led to significant investments in rural communities and the development of life-changing initiatives. Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah emphasized that the 65th anniversary celebrates not only the duration of the partnership but also the generation of volunteers who have strengthened the bond between Ghana and America.

She highlighted the volunteers' role in classrooms, health facilities, farms, and communities, as well as their immersion in local culture. Dr. Ayensu-Danquah commended volunteers, host families, and community leaders for their contributions, recognizing the sacrifices they made for their service. The celebration marked not just a milestone but a tribute to the enduring partnership and the future of mutual growth between the two nations.
