Pas at 75: Quiet celebration, louder political message

KOTA BARU: The 75th anniversary of the Pas party was observed with a low-key ceremony at the Pusat Tarbiyah Islamiyah Kelantan, without the fanfare typically associated with such milestones. The occasion, attended by around 30,000 delegates and observers, highlighted the party's steadfast values of grassroots backing, humility, and religious identity.

Rather than focusing on the event itself, attention was directed towards the individuals who have sustained Pas through political hardships over the decades. As Pas transitions into a potentially pivotal period in its existence, its influence has grown both politically and electorally, placing it at the core of national political strategies, especially with the upcoming 16th General Election (GE16).

Despite this, Pas' leadership remains resolute, stating that the pursuit of power does not equate to compromising its core beliefs. The party's deputy president, Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, underlined that the party would not trade its principles for electoral gains or a position in Putrajaya. With a growing interest from Umno, there's a potential for a more collaborative approach.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki expressed Pas' willingness to endorse any initiative that could bolster Malay unity and political stability, showcasing a readiness to work on matters that could bring the two Malay-majority parties together, despite their differing political stances. However, Pas insists that any collaboration must align with its values and objectives.

The celebration's subdued nature seemed to mirror the party's perception of itself as a movement initially, then gradually evolving into a robust political entity. As Pas looks ahead to GE16 and a possible seat at Putrajaya, its forthcoming chapter will hinge not on how it commemorated 75 years, but rather on its capacity to maintain its principles, foster political alliances, promote Malay unity, and vie for federal leadership.
