Overhead display left dangling at airport’s Terminal 2, investigation under way

An overhead electronic display malfunctioned at Hong Kong airport's recently reopened Terminal 2, prompting authorities to launch a thorough investigation. According to a spokesman, the incident occurred around 8:30am on Saturday when a suspended screen "experienced a technical fault", prompting its fall-arrest safety system to deploy and cause the screen to dangle.

The Airport Authority expressed concern over the incident and pledged to investigate the cause in detail to improve the stability of the system. Terminal 2's departure facilities were reopened on May 27 as part of the airport's HK$141.5 billion ($18.1 billion) three-runway system upgrade. Passengers use Terminal 2 for check-in, immigration and security screening before moving to Terminal 1 for departure.

A maintenance team responded promptly to the malfunctioning screen, cordoning off the area. The incident quickly spread on social media, with users expressing concern over a safety hazard emerging so soon after the terminal's reopening. One user tweeted, "Terminal 2's design is great. Having spent a few hundred million Hong Kong dollars, the whole thing was about to collapse within a few months of opening."
