Nigerian man arraigned over bank robbery

Nigerian man Augustine Maazi appeared in Accra Circuit Court 8 on Wednesday as his involvement in a planned bank robbery case continued. Maazi, previously denied bail, faced eight counts, including conspiracy to commit robbery, and pleaded not guilty. The court ordered him to remain in police custody until September 2, 2026. Maazi was arrested on August 13 after police foiled a plot targeting three banks in Accra's Labone area: GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank.

Intelligence led police to suspect a gang preparing to attack the banks, leading to a chase and shootout that resulted in Maazi's arrest. However, GCB Bank denied any attempt to rob their Labone branch, stating that no customer, staff member, funds, or property were affected.
