My customers taught me Yoruba – London trader, ‘Olakunle Oshodi’

Olakunle Oshodi, a London-based trader, found himself learning the Yoruba language through his interactions with Nigerian customers at the Woolwich Market. As an Iraqi living in London, Oshodi began to notice an increasing number of Yoruba speakers coming to his stall to purchase pepper, fruit, cosmetics, and hair. At first, Oshodi struggled to understand their language, but his curiosity led him to ask for translations, gradually starting his Yoruba education.

The trader's interest in Yoruba was sparked by the fact that over 95% of his customers were Yoruba, and he found himself intrigued by the language. He began to enjoy the "sweet" sound of Yoruba, and was further enticed by the friendly communication style of his customers. Oshodi's Yoruba name, "Olakunle Oshodi," was given to him by one of his customers, who believed it would be a fitting moniker for the trader.

Oshodi has been learning Yoruba for approximately three years, primarily through conversations with his customers at the market. He finds the language to be interesting and enjoys the communication style of the Yoruba people, who are known for their humor and happiness. Oshodi believes that speaking Yoruba has helped him to build stronger relationships with his customers, creating a more relaxed and enjoyable trading atmosphere.

Surprised reactions from customers upon hearing him speak Yoruba have become a common and amusing aspect of his business. Rather than feeling embarrassed by these reactions, Oshodi embraces them, seeing them as a sign of his customers' appreciation for his effort to communicate with them in their native language. He believes that speaking Yoruba has played a significant role in helping him gain the trust of his customers, as it demonstrates his genuine interest in understanding and connecting with them.
