Mumbai Pod Taxi Project Crosses 100-Piling Mark, Elevated Corridor To Connect Kurla, Bandra And BKC

Mumbai's ambitious pod taxi project has reached the 100-piling mark, signaling progress on the elevated Automated Rapid Transit System. This 8.85-kilometer project aims to provide an additional public transport option between Kurla, Bandra, and the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). The initiative is being carried out through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), with no financial burden on the state government or the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

MMRDA Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee recently highlighted the pod taxi as part of Mumbai's evolving public transportation landscape. He emphasized the significance of providing multiple mobility options for Mumbaikars, allowing them to rely less on a single mode of transportation. The first phase of the project, spanning 3.36 kilometers between Kurla and Bandra, will feature eight stations. The complete corridor will boast 22 air-conditioned stations, with each pod capable of accommodating six passengers.

The battery-powered, driverless pods will travel at speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour and operate at a 15-second headway. They will stop at passengers' preferred destinations, potentially reducing travel time by allowing commuters to bypass intermediate stations. By 2031, the system is expected to transport approximately 109,000 passengers daily, with a proposed fare of Rs 21 per kilometer based on 2022 rates.

The project aims to improve first- and last-mile connectivity between Kurla and Bandra railway stations, BKC, and the broader metro network. It is designed to integrate seamlessly with Metro Line 3 at BKC and Metro Line 2B at ITO and IL&FS stations, offering commuters additional interchange options.
